Your Questions About Carbohydrate Addicts [obesity epidemic]

Jenny asks…

How does the obesity epidemic increase climate change?

Recently New Scientist magazine published an article called 'How the obesity epidemic is aggravating global warming' - have you read this? You need to be a subscriber to read it. I've not seen/heard this matter covered in the news, and it sounds pretty crackpot as a concept, so what's the gist of the theory? How is the obesity epidemic aggravating Global Warming? If this is something valid then what do you think supporters of the CO2 bandwagon will do about it? A CO2 fat tax maybe?

admin answers:

I have not read the article.  I don't know about the cause and effect of global warming V the obesity epidemic.  But I can certainly see some interesting parallels.   Both climate change and the Obesity epidemic  have been caused by ill founded, self-serving human intervention.  In both cases, it is possible to look back in time, to a period not very long ago, when a few groups of people set events in motion that have resulted in climate change in one instance and the obesity epidemic in another.   Beyond that, I don't believe the two are related other than to be perfect examples of opportunism by excessive, over-zealous human intervention.

It's fair to say that both interventions harm the many and benefit the few.  I'll not presume to know the solution to climate change.  But I can offer a logical, legitimate reason for the obesity epidemic.  I can even offer a simple, effective solution.   It is not a popular solution, but it is a solution that works - and it works for good.  It is almost opposite to the glossy, false information we are getting today.  We tend to assume that people who present themselves as 'experts', actually know what they are talking about.  To understand why they are wrong, it is necessary to know your body and how it works .  Wouldn't you expect that to be obvious?   Sadly, the subject of how our body works,  appears of no interest to the people who are in charge of today's diet.    This does not prevent them from making pronouncements about what food is healthy for our body.

Most people who follow my advice will agree that it makes perfect sense even to a child.  But to a 'diet expert'  is is extremely threatening.  To them, our body is not supposed to make sense.  It is supposed to require an army of self proclaimed experts, diet gurus, cereal, health and snack food manufacturers, to name a few.  These people all claim they are necessary to make your work.   They are armed with phoney science and deep pockets.  Governments do not dare question these theories. Yet they are entirely built on a foundation of falsehoods.

So lets take a quick look at all this under the microscope of facts.   Till around forty years ago, nobody dieted, except sick people. Like those who suffered a thyroid condition or diabetes.   Type2 diabetes was not yet known.   Yet nobody got fat.  Most people were slim, fit and healthy.  We were taught in schools and by our grandma's what kind of food was right for our body.  As long as we stuck to that kind of food - nobody had to diet and nobody got fat.   Today the average persons knows little or nothing about how their own body works.  They leave that to experts who claim to know everything about the ratio, the composition the taste and flavor of the food we eat.  But they too, seem to know nothing about how our body works.

The most important, most relevant part in all this is our own body.  It was not designed to adapt to food fashions, or the whim of a diet expert.  The human body NEVER adapts.  It evolves and evolution takes centuries, not four decades.  If you want to learn more you can find a very useful free video here:  The Carbohydrate Addicts Manual!  If you have a weight problem, you have a powerful enemy.  You need to learn how to recognize that enemy.  Only then can you fight to win back the body nature intended and you so rightly deserve.

Paul asks…

Please give me your opinion on my introduction to an article about the obesity epidemic (thanks)?

Introduction The prevalence of Obesity and weight problems, continue to soar worldwide.  Not only does it cause serious personal and social health problems.  But it imposes a significant economic burden on society. By current estimates, nearly 60% of adults in the UK and 70% in the USA are overweight, half of them are obese. The importance of addressing the obesity epidemic  in the UK was raised in 2004. it followed the publication in 2004, by the House of Commons, about growing Obesity statistics. Following this, there was a memorable incidence, when a three year old girl, who weighed 40kg, died of heart failure brought on by Obesity.  It drew a lot of attention to the need for government to intervene to combat obesity. The World Health Organization defines obesity as an abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. The world-wide measurement of obesity is the Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI is an index of weight for height. Body Mass Index is calculated by dividing the weight in kilograms by the square of the height in meters. A person is considered obese when their BMI is equal to or more than 30. Obesity impacts a person’s physical appearance, health and self esteem.  Obesity also impacts our views on society, which is further influenced by the media. This article aims to examine, by statistical evidence and to evaluate the causes of obesity.  It will consider the differences in age groups and the physical and emotional effect of obesity on the health of the population.  How obesity is viewed in different societies.  The economic costs of the growing Obesity epidemic, the trend and the actions that are being taken by individuals and society to reduce the growth rate.

I think your introduction is excellent.  I would not presume to change it.  It is an important subject and I'm personally thrilled to see someone make such a great effort to speak up about a dangerous obesity epidemic that few people want to talk about.

Robert asks…

Do you think a lack of exercise is the reason for the obesity epidemic?

Teens suggest that walking is not a "cool" way to exercise.  What do you think?

admin answers:

I don't think it's important whether kids walk, ride a bike, practice a sport or any other physical exercise.  Whatever they think is 'cool' is fine with me.  All that really matters is that they get regular exercise and eat the kind of food that promotes healthy bones, muscles, tissue and organs. The real cause of the obesity epidemic is not about kids being lazy and not getting enough exercise.  It's about kids, who during the most crucial growth period, are being encouraged by 'experts' to eat foods that promote body fat and leads to obesity.

Helen asks…

I read an article that says fruit makes us fat.  Is it true?

I'm confused and would like to know.

admin answers:

Basically the article is saying that chemically altered fructose when consumed in very high quantities is toxic to the body, which is its. High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is basically poison to the human body and has nothing except negative effects on the health when consumed in large quantities. It's one more healthy substance that has been made harmful to the body by chemistry and the food industry.

You must realize that just because a food item or beverage is sold freely in your local store, it is not necessarily good for you. All you can be sure of is that you won't immediately drop dead from consuming that food.  Unless of course you are allergic to it. Heavily processed foods are filled with HFCS and other chemical additives that have directly contributed to the declining health of the general population.

Sharon asks…

Could you live without eating carbohydrates?

I know they give you energy but i was reading this - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1247216/The-Big-Fat-Lies-Britains-obesity-epidemic.html Is it true? I dont even like bread, pasta, sugar or even milk really only a little in my cups of tea. The only carbs i do like are potatoes and rice.

admin answers:

Yes, not only is it true.  But people in the recent past often spent prolonged periods without any carbs food.  To understand why we can live perfectly well without carbs food we need to understand what it is.   Every bit of carbs food you eat goes through your body where it is converted to glucose.  There are no exceptions.  It can be a slice of bread, a lettuce leaf, a bowl of rice or a piece of fruit.  It all ends up as glucose.  So what is glucose?

Gary Taubes who wrote "Good Calories, Bad Calories" spent 7 years going through all the studies over the last century & dividing up the real science from the faulty science & it clearly shows that not only is low carbs the best way to control insulin levels which balances out other hormones & allows the body to function properly but refined carbs actually cause serious damage to health. See the 1 hour Taubes lecture posted below. His main points are: 1. Dietary fat, whether saturated or not, is not a cause of obesity, heart disease or any other chronic disease. 2. The problem is the refined carbs in our diet, their effect on insulin secretion & the hormonal regulation of homeostasis. 3. Sugars - sucrose, high-fructose corn syrup specifically - are particularly harmful, the combination of fructose & glucose simultaneously elevates insulin levels & overload liver with carbs. 4. Through their direct effects on insulin & blood sugar, refined carbs, starches, sugars are the dietary cause of coronary heart disease & diabetes. They are likely dietary causes of cancer, Alzheimer's & other diseases. 5. Obesity is a disorder of excess fat accumulation, not overeating. 6. Consuming excess calories does not cause us to grow fatter. 7. Fattening & obesity are caused by an imbalance in the hormonal regulation of adipose tissue & fat metabolism. Fat synthesis & storage exceed the mobilization of fat from adipose tissue & its subsequent oxidation. 8. Insulin is the primary regulator of fat storage. When insulin levels fall, we release fat from fat tissue. 9. By stimulating insulin secretion, carbs make us fat. 10. By driving fat accumulation, carbs also increase hunger & decrease the amount of energy we expend in metabolism & physical activity. There is no better way to bring the body to the state of optimal health than with a low carbs way of eating.  What does that mean?  It means a high protein diet.  Protein doesn't cause high blood pressure, high blood sugar or high cholesterol, it cures it. It is actually dangerous to take meds that lower these levels and do low carb at the same time. U.S. Government guidelines were changed 35 years ago to suggest we lower our fat intake & increase our carb intake. American society followed these recommendations & lowered their fat intake by 11% & increased their carb consumption. In this same time frame obesity, type2 diabetes, heart disease, colon and bowel cancer are all at epidemic levels. Through their direct effects on insulin & blood sugar, refined carbohydrates are the dietary cause of coronary heart disease & diabetes. A low carbohydrate diet is a high protein and fat diet.  Although it is completely possible to live on a fat/protein only diet for long term (as proven by research done in a hospital setting) it becomes boring fairly quickly. Luckily many vegetables & some fruits, nuts & seeds are low in carbs & greatly expand the diet. Most long term low carbers eat as many, if not more non starchy vegetables than vegetarians. Glucose is the bodies preferred fuel (if you want to get technical, it actually burns alcohol most efficiently, but that doesn't make it any healthier for the body than carbs), the body can convert 100% of carbs, 58% of protein & 10% of dietary fat into glucose. The body can also be fueled by fat (dietary fat & fat cells) but only in the absence of carbs. Your brain actually prefers* to be fueled by ketones (part of the fat burning process), it does require glucose also, but glucose can be easily converted from excess protein if needed or dietary fat. Plaque build up in the arteries is more attributable to carb consumption than dietary fats, which seems to be the conclusion of the following study. Carb consumption raises triglycerides & VLDL (bad cholesterol). Fats raise the HDL (good cholesterol). High triglyceride levels & low HDL levels are an indicator of plaque & glycation - the precursors to a heart attack & heart disease. Http://heartscanblog.blogspot.com/2009/1… study from the Oxford group examining the postprandial (after-eating) effects of a low-fat vs. Low-carbohydrate diet. (Roberts R et al, 2008) Postprandial lipoproteins, you'd think, would be plentiful after ingesting a large quantity of fat, since fat must be absorbed via Watch the video here for more information:   Click here for more information about the obesity epidemic.
